The 2020 Cherokee arrives just one year after a timely refresh. As a part of the SUV’s fifth generation, the streamlined 2020 model is loaded with fresh entertainment and safety technology. It comes with popular features like Android Auto™, Apple CarPlay™, and can be equipped with a recently-available turbocharged engine.
The new 270-horsepower turbocharged 4-cylinder option delivers more than enough muscles for highway accelerating or off-road adventuring, as do the optional 271-horsepower V6 and the base 180-horsepower 4-cylinder. A nine-speed automatic transmission comes paired with all engines.
The Cherokee promises a smooth trip on city streets and busy interstates, and its off-roading prowess is unmatched in its class. To optimize its off-roading capability, the Trailhawk trim comes loaded with specialized features like specialized suspension and enhanced four-wheel drive. When equipped for the job, the Cherokee can tow up to 4,500 pounds.
On the inside, the Cherokee complements its sheer power with a relaxing ride. Up to five people can ride in the comfortable cabin, with supportive seating in both spacious rows. You can secure children in the back thanks to the SUV’s two sets of LATCH car seat connections, and all the attachments are easy to find and fasten. Jeep has appointed the cabin with high-end materials throughout, and you can customize the interior with available features like leather or upgraded cloth upholstery, a sunroof, a heated steering wheel, and more.
The SUV also provides plenty of cargo space for any road trip, and you’ll find 25.8 cubic feet for storage behind the back row. The rear seats can also be folded to open up a total of 54.7 cubic feet.
The Cherokee comes with a Uconnect touchscreen infotainment system, and its available tech features include Alpine sound, smartphone integration, push-button start, satellite radio, navigation, and others. A rearview camera and rear parking sensors come standard, while available safety features include adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, and parallel and perpendicular park assist.
The Cherokee has blazed bold new trails in the SUV segment ever since its arrival in the early 1970s. Jeep chose to rework their luxury four-wheel drive Wagoneer in 1974, reimagining the station wagon as something entirely different. As a result, the Cherokee was one of the first vehicles to be considered a true sport utility vehicle. The original models hit the road with a roomy interior and two doors, while a four-door version followed in 1977.
The Cherokee expanded on the Wagoneer’s family-friendly qualities with a more modern style and improved comfort, and those enhancements continued when the second generation began in 1984. During this time, other manufacturers noticed the Cherokee’s growing popularity and developed their own SUVs. Even with the new competition, the Cherokee continued to enjoy brisk sales across the U.S.
Further along the Cherokee’s timeline, Jeep used it as the starting point for their spacious midsize SUV, the Grand Cherokee. The rebranded the standard Cherokee as the Jeep Liberty during the 2000s, but revived the Cherokee name in 2014. By this point, the compact SUV was equipped with contemporary tech like navigation, satellite radio, and traction control. Jeep fans were delighted when the fifth generation debuted with a stylish, sleek design that still retained some classic Jeep features. As drivers expect from the maker, the modern Cherokee masterfully pairs everyday convenience with impressive performance in any scenario.
